The platform’s endurance, scale and reputation within the criminal community place it alongside now-defunct darknet markets such as Dream Market and Silk Road, both notorious for their role in facilitating online drug trafficking. Criminal entities involved in drug trafficking continue to upgrade their tooling and advance their operations in the Dark Web. Threat actors have begun developing proprietary mobile apps allowing buyers and sellers of illegal goods to communicate in close to real-time mode, as well as transmitting information about “packages” with delivered drugs via alternative digital channels. This process is accelerated by the availability of Instant Messengers (IMs) and Automated Bots which allow the distribution of information across available digital channels with relatively high levels of anonymity.
Archetyp Market attracted more than 600,000 users with over 17,000 listings facilitating high volumes of illicit drug sales, including fentanyl, cocaine, MDMA, amphetamines and synthetic opioids. Europol compared the platform’s endurance, scale and reputation to other notorious and now-defunct drug marketplaces such as Dream Market and Silk Road. As large platforms face disruption from law enforcement action, dark web infighting, and an influx of users from Telegram, there’s a growing shift toward smaller, more specialized marketplaces.
Without regulatory oversight, buyers risk receiving ineffective or harmful substances. Dark web marketplaces facilitate the distribution of synthetic drugs, chemically engineered substances designed to mimic natural compounds. These substances evade legal restrictions by altering molecular structures, making regulation difficult. The lack of quality control increases contamination risks, unpredictable potency, and severe health consequences.
Our proposed research approach can fix this by implementing it in other marketplaces in other countries. This paper recognizes that the data it uses originates from the darknet, a virtual illicit market. The research team took all protective measures to avoid any active participation in illegal activities, but the data analysis was strictly for academic purposes, which would enrich scientific knowledge in the field of public health. We carefully considered the data structure and conducted spatial analysis to ensure a robust analysis. In our research, we included only the listings containing less than or equal to 5 g of any substance, thereby eliminating outliers and wholesale listings. Listings measured in units or milliliters were also excluded due to the difficulty distinguishing personal purchases from wholesale ones.
The Analysis Steps
Silk Road was one of the first darknet markets, but in 2013, the FBI shut it down. Its founder, Ross Ulbricht, was arrested, and law enforcement took control of the site. Since then, many copycat markets have tried to replace it, but not all of them have lasted.
In this capacity, Parsarad established Nemesis and held full control over the marketplace and its virtual currency wallets. Parsarad enriched himself from fees he charged users of Nemesis with every transaction, pocketing what OFAC estimates to be millions of dollars over the course of the marketplace’s existence. In addition to providing criminals with a platform to conduct transactions, Parsarad laundered virtual currencies for narcotics traffickers and cybercriminals active on Nemesis. Opponents of strict dark web policing sometimes argue that such operations drive criminal activity to even more hidden or encrypted platforms, making detection harder. They may also raise privacy and surveillance concerns, warning that aggressive cyber policies risk collateral impacts on online freedom and legitimate users of anonymity technologies. The operation targeted Archetyp Market, a platform with over 600,000 users and transactions totaling at least 250 million euros, underscoring the scale and ongoing challenge of illicit drug sales facilitated by anonymizing technologies.

Archetyp encouraged vendors to re-establish their reputations through Pretty Good Privacy (PGP)-signed migration messages – cryptographically signed proofs that linked new accounts to profiles from previous marketplaces.
